Introducing Two New Sections
To Help you Read What You Want, We Now Have "US Politics" and "Business Growth" as Separate Subscriptions You can Receive
Hi Timeless Leaders,
As I’m advancing in my second year of maintaining this newsletter, a number of conversations have helped me realize that it’s time for me to segment this list - and give you more controls over what kinds of emails you receive from me.
The Paid Tier
I started this a few weeks ago by added a “Paid” tier to the newsletter, with the main focus of creating a way to set up live conversations about leadership.
This group is not about gating content (although occasional posts may be). It’s much more about building authentic community with dedicated readers. It’s also NOT about monetization, and while you can pay to join, there will always be ways that you can join through engagement (like the survey incentive I promoted the last few weeks).
I’m excited to be adding folks to this group now on a regular basis, and will host my first call next month - stay tuned!
Introducing “Sections”
The latest update I’m excited to share is the addition of two next sections. This is an experiment, but I think it will prove useful and lead to more sections in the future.
Important: by default you are NOT opted in to either of these sections. If you want to subscribe you can read on for instructions for how to do that.
New Section: US Politics
I created this section because I know that, over time, I’m going to want to write about politics as one of the most influential domains of leadership.
That said, I know that you didn’t subscribe to my newsletter necessarily expecting politically themed content, and therefore I want to give you a chance to opt-in.
What’s my unique angle and approach?
The first thing is that whenever I write about politics, I’ll be connecting my commentary back to the Timeless Leadership model. In addition to that, I’m likely to draw on my background as a World History teacher, a Political Science major at Haverford, and some of my on-going experience organizing and advocating for causes and candidates as a private citizen.
I also read a lot of diverse sources, so will draw on those for inspiration and evidence.
My aim with any politically focused writing will be to synthesize the news drawing on my experience and academic background, while providing concrete suggestions on what to do with the insights presented.
Given the sensitivity of some political topics, I may sometimes put this content behind a paywall. An example is the post I wrote yesterday, which I’ve categorized for this section and made a paid post… but if you want access you can follow instructions on how to read it.
I don’t plan to write with any particular schedule on politics - mainly if there’s something really important going on (like right now) or I feel like I can offer something especially unique - then I’ll share it here.
New Section: Business Growth
One of the other topics that I expect to write more about this year is Business Growth. While I believe most of my readers work in the private sector, I don’t want to assume that all of you want to go deep with me on this topic.
What’s my unique angle and approach?
When I write about business growth, I’m pulling from my experience as a 2x founder of bootstrapped ventures, my studies at Stanford GSB, my ~6 years working at Box, and my experience as an investor, consultant, and interim operator at small companies.
What I’m generally working to address in this section are questions like:
What methods and practices of strategic planning are most effective?
How do you build and evolve an effective go-to-market engine?
How do you leverage talent and culture efforts to drive business outcomes?
If these sorts of questions intrigue you, I encourage you to subscribe. Like the US Politics section I don’t have a specific publication schedule I’m planning here, but will write whenever the opportunity to say something important and timely pops up.
How to Subscribe
If you’ve signed up for a Substack account, you’ll be able to adjust your subscription settings with just a few clicks from my Substack’s homepage.
First you’ll navigate to the top corner with your profile button and go down to “Manage Subscription.”
From there, scroll down to “Notifications”. You’ll see the two new sections with the toggles greyed out. Update your subscriptions as you wish with a simple click on the corresponding toggle - and you’re all set!
You can also find these settings by clicking the “Unsubscribe” button at this end of this email - but please be careful not to accidentally unsubscribe from the whole thing!
Having trouble with this at all? Send me a message and let me know. Unfortunately Substack doesn’t give me the ability to control which sections an individual is subscribed to (I can only control if you’re paid, free, or completely unsubscribed).
Again, this is an experiment, and I appreciate you engaging with me to figure out the best way for us to have deep, powerful, timely conversations about the reality of leadership for everyday people.
Summary & Next Steps
In summary, here are the two main points for today:
Timeless Leadership (this Substack) has a paid tier. Joining gets you monthly Zoom calls to breakdown leadership challenges.
FYI - If you want to apply for a complimentary membership, book a time to chat and we can discuss whether this is a good fit for you and your goals.
We now have two new sections - US Politics and Business Growth.
You have to directly opt-in to these Sections, so follow the instruction above to do that.
I’m excited for this next step for tailoring our engagement together, and I hope you are too!
Yours truly,
Joe
Very cool. I like that Substack allows for this. I’ll go in and select the business growth section.
